About Us
About the Discovery Center at Water’s Edge
The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is a place where curiosity comes alive. It’s where students, families, and lifelong learners explore, play, innovate, and discover the science and technology that have shaped our world, and will shape our future.
For more than 100 years, Northeastern Maryland has been home to world-changing innovation rooted in Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). From high-speed photography and early computing to advances in defense, communications, and beyond, this region has played a pivotal role in global technology. The Discovery Center brings that legacy to life and makes it accessible to everyone.
A Place to Explore and Imagine
At the Discovery Center, visitors will experience hands-on exhibits that explore the past, present, and future of technology in computing, energy, agriculture, 3D printing, virtual reality, and more. Students of all ages will be able to create, experiment, and connect with STEM in meaningful ways, whether through interactive exhibits, maker spaces, after-school programs, or special events.
Our goal is simple: to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and help prepare the next generation to succeed in a STEM-driven world.
Growing in Phases
The Discovery Center is being developed in phases to ensure thoughtful growth and long-term impact.
Phase I
Opened in 2023 with the Preview Center at Water’s Edge in Belcamp, MD, offering a first look at what’s to come.
Phase II
Opening in 2025, will feature a 10,000-square-foot facility with 12–15 hands-on exhibits, an IMAX auditorium, classrooms, flexible space, and a small store.
Phase III
Will expand the Center to a 35,000-square-foot permanent facility capable of welcoming more than 100,000 visitors annually.
A Community-Driven Mission
The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by the APG Centennial Celebration Association. We are committed to serving the entire community, including providing free and accessible programs for underserved populations. Through outreach events, traveling exhibits, and signature programs like the Magic of Science Fair and Family Festival, we bring science beyond our walls and into the community.
Why It Matters
When the Army Ordnance Museum closed in 2011, Harford County lost a major cultural and educational asset. The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is its modern successor and reimagined for today’s learners and tomorrow’s innovators.
We envision the Discovery Center becoming one of the most visited attractions north of Baltimore, drawing families, students, educators, and visitors from across the Mid-Atlantic. Most importantly, we aim to ignite a lifelong love of discovery in every visitor who walks through our doors.
